Mallika first made an enquiry in April 2009. After selection and interview Mallika attended First Class Learning’s initial two day training course in Darlington and after began her marketing campaign throughout the summer holidays. She opened her First Class Learning maths and English Centre in Rotherham at the start of the new term in September.

Three months down the line and Mallika has a thriving centre with over twenty students and made a great impression with other franchisees at First Class Learning’s annual conference this year. Her drive and enthusiasm together with the support of her family has clearly contributed to her success. Here is what she has to say about her experience with First Class Learning:
“It has been crazy with all the enquiries, but all is worth it as I have 20 students already. There are two more children that I have assessed and am expecting them to attend from next week.
On the marketing side the biggest thing I have done is leaflet distribution. Each time we do this there are a few calls the next day so it really works. We have almost finished the first lot so ordered another 5000 leaflets which we are slowly distributing. I have also managed to get a small article in one of local newsletter and have reached two schools so far to put  leaflets in children’s school bags.
At the moment I get more than a 50% hit rate (one in two enquiries I have a student enrolling). I was planning to get an assistant around December but as the class size has grown faster than expected I have already interviewed one candidate (early retired primary teacher).

I also had an interesting encounter with some BBC journalists a couple of weeks ago. They were recording stories from local people in the church hall where I hold my class. One asked me to tell her why I had started this venture with the background I have as a scientist and got a 5-7 min recorded interview. I am not sure where it will lead to but I did make contact with the main journalist which may help me in future to get some advertising.”
