Tony & Jeanette Witterick

Tony and Jeanette Witterick

After successful careers in retail, Tony and Jeanette had retired and moved abroad to Spain. But it wasn’t long before they started to get itchy feet.

Having a keen interest in food, they explored the option of setting up their own bistro or restaurant, and in preparation, Tony worked as a chef for a year at the same time as achieving his qualifications. The pub industry wasn’t one they’d initially considered and the idea of taking on an existing business really appealed to them.

Tony explained, “That October, we attended a Discovery Day, and got a really good feel for Marston’s. It seemed like a company which was proud of its heritage and had retained the family feel, but was also one which wasn’t afraid to innovate and try new things.

“The Old Hall in Timperley became available shortly after. The location made it ideal for us, as we wanted to be close to our family. It’s a beautiful pub, in a lovely rural area. It was important for us to be somewhere which offered us a great lifestyle as well as the right business opportunity.”

Since taking on the Old Hall, the couple have focused on putting the pub at the heart of the community. “We always think of the experience we’d want to receive as customers, and make sure that the Old Hall offers just that”, explained Tony. “Our customers want a true community pub atmosphere, and it’s important to them that we’re visible in the business too.”

“It’s been a lot of hard work since we started here. We’ve given it our all, but we’re seeing the results. Customers who haven’t used the pub for a while are coming back, and we’ve made it much more family-friendly. We’ve done lots of events which have gone down well, and raised money for charity, too.”
