The Magic Of Birth Photography

Not so long ago, our amazing franchisee owner and Photography for Little People family member Poppy had the opportunity to be a part of something truly amazing.

Photography for Little People Franchise

Poppy runs her own successful franchise business down in Torquay. She specialises in maternity, newborn and family photography. Poppy’s sister had asked her to be her birth partner and she wanted the moment cherished forever through photos. Below, Poppy takes us on the journey of how the special day unfolded through the eyes of a sister and photographer.

“It happened all so very quickly! My sister went into labour at 6:30am on 31st March, 3 weeks early which was a total shock to everyone. As her birth partner, I got the call from the hospital at about 9am to let me know I might be required sooner than planned.

With it being Easter weekend, I had friends over. I have given birth before so I thought I knew it was a long process, mine being 26 hours and resulting in a C section! So I carried on as normal and cooked everyone breakfast, dropped them at the beach and ambled my way over to Torbay hospital, arriving around 11am.

Once I arrived, I was immediately handed scrubs and was told that the theatre room was ready and the on-call team should be with us within the hour! Show time. My sister was going for hypno-birthing but being on a hormone drip this all went out the window, so my job of keeping her calm and introducing breathing techniques got a stern reaction.

We were all theatre prepped and within 40 minutes everyone was ready and we headed into the theatre room, a swarm of people all concentrating on the job at hand. I had a chat with the wonderful surgeon Sam Booth to ask if it would be OK if I photographed the birth. He was more than happy for me to do this as long as I didn’t pass out – not something I could agree wouldn’t happen, as it was the first time I had photographed a birth.

All set and the magic started. Happily chatting to my sister & in what seemed like seconds I was told he is on his way out so get your camera ready!!

Wow wow wow – it brings a tear to my eye to even recall the amazement of seeing little William’s head come out of my sisters tummy! It wasn’t until I had captured this truly incredible experience that I took the camera away from my face and had time to take in what I had seen & then and only then did I shed a tear.

My sister was incredible and as an older mum her little miracle baby entered the world early but perfect, weighing in at 6lbs 8oz on 31st March at 12:50pm – not quite an April fools baby.

What an amazing experience to share and be a part of, firstly as a sister, but then be able to photograph an event so personal and magical.”
