Richard Moss: Lancaster (LA) / Blackpool (FY)

After a long career in specialised engineering Richard Moss decided it was now or never to strike out on his own. A close friendship with a current Speedy Freight Franchisee helped Richard make the decision to come on board.

Two Speedy Freight franchisees

Why did you go down the courier franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

I wanted to be in control of my working future and run my own business. I chose Speedy Freight as I used them as a supplier in my previous role and knew the product and service were excellent.

What did you do before taking up a franchise?

I was a Production Control Manager for an Engineering Company in the Aerospace sector.

How did you raise the finance?

Sold my car! And savings.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

Just before launch, I spent three days at the Knutsford Branch, learning the systems and seeing how a busy branch runs. After the launch I received three weeks of intensive support from FDSM, who assisted in all aspects of promoting the service within my area. The FDSM are available, at any time, to offer further support or advice and regularly visit us to help in developing the business.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

After a short commute, I arrive about 8.00-8.30am and prepare for the day. The time is spent between booking jobs, sourcing vehicles and promoting the business through telephone calls.

What challenges have you faced?

With any new business it’s developing the customer base and also learning the aspects of running your own business.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

You obviously spend so much of your day at work, it’s very important that you enjoy what you do. This is the main thing for me with the added bonus of seeing your business grow each month.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?

Be realistic. Be prepared to put the hard work in and then reap the rewards.

What are your plans for the future?

To consolidate a regular customer base and consider expanding internally and externally if the opportunity arises.

Would you do it again?

Most definitely.
