New Owners Expand Local Badgemaking Firm

Since Steve Randerson, 25, and Paul Slack, 54 took over as new owners of Recognition Express in Kent business has flooded in. So much so that they have moved to larger premises in the Medway Enterprise Centre to meet growing production demands.

In just two weeks they have processed over 100 orders including logo printed beanie hats and footballs for current FA Trophy holder Ebbsfleet United and £1,000 worth of hooded tops for this year’s leavers at Greenacre School in Walderslade which will be personalised to each child.

Steve Randerson was already working in the business when previous owner Jeff Rowe decided to retire. He knew the business was very successful and has teamed up with friend Paul Slack to buy the company from Jeff. Both men live in the Medway area and have just a ten minute commute to their new premises. They currently employ one other member of staff, Sam Beal, as a production assistant.

Steve said: “The phone hasn’t stopped ringing and we are determined to keep all our customers as happy as they were with Jeff. Paul and I have complementary skills and because I know the business like the back of my hand we have hit the ground running.”

Added Paul: “I have always wanted to run my own business and was ready for a career move. I was first introduced to Recognition Express as a client in 2005 and became firm friends with Steve. I could see how well the company was doing, so when the chance came to go into partnership I seized the opportunity with both hands.”

The Kent franchise is best known for its expertise in badge making and through its contact with Kent County Supplies provides badges for nearly every school in the county. Corporate clothing is a recent addition to Recognition Express’ product range which Paul and Steve believe will enable them to grow their business significantly – despite the credit crunch.

Nigel Toplis, managing director Recognition Express said: “We are sad to say goodbye to Jeff and wish him all the best for a happy retirement.  He ran a very successful business and I am confident that Steve and Paul will take the business from strength to strength.”
